How tf do people tint their lashes without getting it in their eyes

When I tried dyeing my eyebrows I had no issues doing it myself, but when it came to my lashes that shit got too close for comfort and I don't wanna blind myself. I closed my eyes as tight as possible but I swear that shit still found a way to get in. So how am I supposed to do it without getting it professionally done.
