When I was in college. I experimented a lot with my style. Street wear, High fashion all that but finally settled on this classic style. I always wanted to wear those high quality blazers but I didn't have that much disposable income. I was too ashamed to ask my dad for anything
So one method I found was this. You can insane deals on top tier garments on ebay. Some of them are literally in nee condition but are still discounted by like 80-90%
Ready made Suit Brands to look for:
English Style
-Anderson and Sheppard
-Henry Poole
-Huntsman
American Style
-Brooks Brothers
-Todd Snyder
-Ralph Lauren purple label
Italian Style
-Brioni
-Kiton
-Isaia
-Loro Piana
-Canali (higher lines)
-Zegna (Couture line)
-Cesare Attolini
One more thing to keep in mind. England doesn't have very high quality ready to wear stuff. Most of the high quality english suits and blazers you'll see on eBay will come from saville row and be bespoke so they might need more alterations keep that in mind.
Difference between Savile Row and Neopolitan Tailoring and American sack suits.
Imo Italian suits look the most flattering but you need to be lean and somewhat tall to pull it off. If you are too jacked and have some weight on your mid section. Go to English style or even American suit. It is an acquired taste but I personally like it lot. Looks very stylish imo. Think Brad Pitt in meet Joe black that is the American suit.
There's also the Parisian style that's cut even closer to the body and is even bolder than Italian but that's more into high fashion territory imo. If you want that old money/classic style stick to these three silhouettes.
2. eBay Strategy
Search like this: Use keywords like โSavile Row suit 38Rโ or โBrioni handmade jacket.โ
Save searches: Let eBay notify you the second something gets listed.
Look for poor listings: Misspelled brand names ("Briony" instead of "Brioni") = fewer bidders = cheap deals.
Snipe Auctions: Bid at the last second using tools like Gixen.
One more thing if you are down to tailoring the suit yourself or can find a good tailor. There are people who also directly sell cloth. Yes cloth fabrics. Luxury fabrics like Cashmere, Pure Wool, Silk etc from India, China Pakistan, Australia. If you do this but you need to know what you are doing and all the specifics about the fabric, buying cloth is not straight forward you could end up with a fabric that is meant for carpet rugs instead of a suit. So do more research but You can see get an utterly beautiful suit for dirt cheap. I have done this before and got a suit for 1/5th the price including tailoring charges of what I would have gotten if I bought it from loro piana
3. Find Your Measurements
Forget โSmall/Medium/Largeโ sizing. You need exact measurements:
Shoulder to shoulder
Chest (pit to pit)
Sleeve length
Jacket length (bottom of collar to hem)
Waist, inseam, rise (for pants)
Ask the seller for measurements if not listed. Tailored suits are not all the same size even if labeled "40R." I'm 44R but I often can get away with 42R too it depends..
Also one more thing the shoulders don't fit, don't buy it. Everything else can be altered, shoulders cannot. This is crucial.
4. Authentication
Ask for close-up photos of tags, stitching, buttonholes, and linings.
Compare with known authentic pieces online. These high end suits generally have a lot of handwork and attention to details. Everything looks and feels extremely premium. High armholes, ticket pockets, surgeon cuffs these are all signature Savile Row Touches. While Italians are more flashy and more bold with their designs. Just do your research
Avoid anything โtoo cheapโ without proof Brioni jackets for $50 are usually fake or heavily damaged.
5. Budget for Tailoring
Even the best deal may need slight adjustments. Budget $50โ$150 for a local tailor to:
Adjust sleeves
Bring in the waist
Hem pants
Major changes (like shoulder or chest alterations) are risky and expensive so buy close to your fit.
Bonus Tip-Be mindful of shipping charges sometimes they can be ridiculously expensive so you can contact them seller and find a way to get it shipped to your place for cheap throught package aggregators instead of eBay
Examples they sell for thousands of dollars retail but you can buy them for a just a couple hundred dollars on ebay
