How to grow thicker hair at 21? Minoxidil any good? Got thin hair genes

Is growing thicker hair even possible at 21 still? I have heard a lot about minoxidil and that its the pretty much the only thing one can use for this manner. Has anyone had experience with it or other products and their usage? Thing is i believe its cause of my genetics because my father has very thin hair as well. can i still do sth about it or is it over?
