When it comes to hosting you can go one of 2 routers , either 1 buy a vps or self host with a reverse proxy although i dont recommend it due to vps being far superior interms of performance and security.

If you reduced overheads like disabling GUI and stick to bare bones minimal service you could make it work. Maybe buy a SSD or something since the older HDDs are slow asf

Making your own Reddit or Discord platform is a faster and cheaper option. The only reason to make your own standalone internet forum nowadays is either because you want a very strict & curated userbase plus privacy, you want to create and share content that is unacceptable on other forums (or outright illegal), or you want to share technical data or interactivity that isn't possible with standard forums.
