Rectilinear “lens distortion” technically isn’t lens distortion, since rectilinear lenses are the ones without lens distortion, but I’ll just call it lens distortion for the lack of a better term.
Rectilinear lenses exhibit a stretching-out effect. The shorter the focal length, the stronger the stretch. The farther you get from the center of the photo, the stronger the stretch. You can see this effect when you turn the FOV all the way up in video games.
If you wanna fraud in your Tinder photos, a trick you can employ is using rectilinear distortion to your advantage.
Check out the big difference! My upper third is enlarged in the left pic, and my lower third is enlarged in the right pic. Depending on your situation, you may want to position yourself higher or lower in frontal shots to expand the upper or lower areas of your face.
Here’s the same upper/lower technique but cropped so the faces are lined up:
