Why humans are so intelligent is still a mystery to mainstream science. In order for you to understand my theory you need to understand the following things:
Brain size relative to body size is the biggest indicator of intelligence in animals. Humans have the biggest brain to body ratio among all mammals.
Human brains are very large, and as a result, human skulls are also large to accommodate the brain.
Human babies having such large heads is the reason why the human birth is such a difficult task compared to all other animals.
What other species of animals needs help from others from its own species to give birth?
What other species has such a high frequency of mothers dying in labour? None.
Human babies are actually born quite premature in comparison to most other animals, most other animals can walk around on the first day of life. Human babies are incredibly helpless.
But it is necessary for humans to be born so prematurely. Otherwise the human birth would go from extremely difficult to impossible. The baby head needs to get out of the womb before it gets too big for the mother to handle.
It is widely believed that the only reason humans didn’t evolve even bigger brains is because it was becoming increasingly difficult for human women to give birth.
So why didn’t women evolve even wider hips to accommodate such a difficult birth? Because then it would become harder for women to move around and run with their legs. So this trait was never selected for.
Alright so we’ve established that human brains are large. As large as our anatomy allowed us to evolve and we have the most difficult birth because of it.
But why is it that we evolved such large brains?
Evolution never selects for “long term solutions”, every little change that occurs has to bring an instantaneous advantage to the species.
So even though human technology enables us to use our intelligence to the limit, our hunter gatherer ancestors, the ones who actually evolved the intelligence that we have today, barely grazed the surface of our brain capabilities.
Human intelligence far surpasses what was needed for survival for our hunter gatherer ancestors. Their lifestyle simply didn’t require such a level of intelligence. So why develop it?
Not to mention a large brain consumes a lot of energy. Which means that this trait made it so our ancestors had to eat more, further increasing the difficulty to survive.
Taking all that into account, modern scientists are baffled as to why humans evolved such large brains. It simply didn’t seem worthwhile at the time for evolution to have taken that course.
THE ANSWER:
Humans never selected for intelligence little by little in a world where everyone far surpassed the minimum requirement of intelligence to do everything just fine.
Back then, THE RULE BY THE STRONG reigned supreme. Only the biggest and strongest CHADS got to reproduce.
So what happened was…
IT WASN’T INTELLIGENCE THAT WAS SELECTED FOR, IT WAS THE SIZE OF THE SKULL THAT MATTERED.
