it’s mainly hex editing and tool-based editing for FireRed and Emerald. There are a lot of dedicated tools for scripting, mapping, and inserting sprites, and I can handle the sprite and art creation myself. If you use the modern decompilation projects like pokemon firered or pokemon emerald, the game is rebuilt from source in C, which is now the preferred method for more advanced hacks.
