What should I do?

I used to be unable to look at people but it somehow fixed itself with time and no my self esteem didn't get better.

I just read a lot of stuff about how important it is to look people in the eyes.

Moderation is key. If you can't look into their eyes just look between their brows. Do it for 3ish seconds then look away briefly before focusing back on that spot. If you're too scared of their eyes it will at least make it look like you're neurotypical enough to look into their eyes. Normies can't tell. Whatever you do, keep your eyes focused on one spot. It's how they train autistic people to use an appropriate level of eye contact.
