Alright, so as you some of you know I’m a teacher-in-training and I’m currently doing my internship at a high school. I’ve been a month in, so far I’ve mainly been observing which is good since as a new, random bearded man in the classroom, I feel I’m bound to weird out these 7th grade students since they’ve never dealt with student teachers before.

But these students honestly could get me in trouble if I’m not careful! Seriously, what the fuck. I was in class and at one point, one of the students in my class blurts out “nigger.” In the most monotonous voice ever. I had to pokerfacemaxx because if anyone sees I’m laughing they’re gonna think I’m racist.

By the way, no one else was reacting to him saying nigger, which he did a couple of times throughout the day. Every time I was doing my best not to laugh. Just fucking lol, this wasn’t what I signed up for.

A sub is still a teacher though, no idea why others think it’s not the same. Sure, there’s no parent-teacher conferences, meetings, etc that you have to deal with but you’re still as much of a teacher as anyone else that’s licensed to teach. Here in the Netherlands, we don’t have subs. You’re either a licensed teacher that went through a 4-year teacher trainer program or you’re not in the classroom. I’ve seen exceptions though, for example, when I studied computer science, I had a teacher who was my age but he was able to teach programming since he had experience even though there’s no education major for programming.

when I was in 10th grade I used to be in an english class with my friends sitting near the front. Once we were doing a class activity where everyone was talking in their seperate groups and I was bantering with them all.

So I was talking and then nearing the end I finished off what I said with "nigga" but right as I said this, the teacher wrapped the activity and the whole class went silent while all my friends just heard my isolated "nigga."

So you have to imagine a whole group of teens going from a loudy chatty room to nothing in a second while after the nothing you just hear "nigga." somehow though, the teacher didn't hear me at all and I was fine - though during that moment I was shitting myself expecting to get in a bunch of trouble.

Btw, your story reminds me of my first year in high school (also 7th grade, in NL we don’t have middle schools) and the class was loud and chatty, and then suddenly we went silent.
