I don't think anarchy is ideal because of free riders. If my community is putting money towards defense, someone would benefit just from being in close proxmity without actually providing anything in return. That's how conquest has historically happened and state capture soon follows (because then you need bureaucracy to manage all the new serfs you now have).

People need to get it through their thick skulls that one isn't necessarily better than the other in any one context

It all depends on the circumstances and the pressing needs of the time

Big govt in a time of peace and prosperity isn't good

What about internal conflicts? Stuff like race & religion

What about trade, major recessions and job losses?

What about local bad actors seeking to exploit their fellow citizen?

If a small government is in charge during times like these, only 3 things happen :

1. They get voted out in favor of a big government that promises to fix things
2. They get overthrown by some power hungry nut in the military
3. They get overthrown by pure angry mob and then the military has to step in
