You have to look at it before colonialism and the modern borders were drawn, and also going by physical geography. Africa’s modern borders mean very little. West Africa is split between the open and breathable north and middle and the humid dense tropics in the south. The closer you get to the southern coast of West Africa or let alone the Congo Basin, the more everything becomes dense jungle that is too hazardous and difficult to make development fully worth it, let alone sustainable.

There are cities in what’s now Morocco, Mauritania, Mali that were established about 1000 years ago. Whereas the biggest cities in inland sub Saharan Africa were built by European colonizers in the 1800s and then handed back to Africans when the European empires weren’t getting enough ROI on colonizing Africa.
