Both, I actually saw that movie back when it appeared, a Russian speaking friend showed it to me, said it was based on a very famous sci-fi novel, but it was a confusing mess and he wasn't very convincing as an action hero. During the movie, my friend kept explaining things to me, he admitted that you need to read the book first to understand what exactly was happening there.
