try to watch something you find interesting but ofc in german, not something you have to force yourself to do. when I started learning english (I was about 12-13) I just watched a lot of english minecraft bedwars videos with commentary

but if u have a normal IQ and are able to read (1% of the population in 2025), then u can only p much only consume content which is either textual or professionally produced to cut out all the downtime. otherwise it's just too fucking slow

i try to focus on linguistics and history where i can because that's what actually interests me, but some of these presenters manage to ruin even that.

i should really be watching more casual, conversational content for practice but it legit makes my ears bleed most of the time

mostly just because being a monoglot is incredibly cringe and embarrassing tbh, esp in anno domini 2025 where every retarded kid in europe is like C3 in english. i like german grammar too but i really have no actual need to learn it, and picked it because it's the language i knew best from school so thought it'd be the easiest to pick back up and level up

ive been able to read p much anything (bar like high-brow philosophy which i haven't really attempted) for years now, but my listening comprehension is still much worse and never gets better because i rarely put the effort in to train it. and my ability to produce the language is leagues worse again

this is true in a sense and i do put on the persona of the haughty anglo online, also yeah 99% of the euros who say they can speak several languages actually just speak their native language and english, and the rest are basically just "badly ordering a beer" level, but they usually do speak english really quite well.

but if anything it's easier to do this if u DONT speak english natively. i live in a non-english speaking country so i see this every day - people from all over the world just walk up to anyone and immediately address them in english with total confidence and the expectation that they should be answered in english too - and it's ok because since they also had to learn english, it's like they're meeting their counterpart on a level playing field, and if the other person can't speak english back then they're just an uneducated trog.

but if an anglo just goes, "hey excuse me do you sp-" it's instantly like "wow this entitled prick thinks he can come here and just speak english to everyone?!?!". so whenever i go to a country, even just passing through, i have to learn "excuse me, do you speak english" in the local language at the very least, to avoid a major faux pas, all the the while these random spaniggers go "ELLO I AM A-LOOKING FOR ESPICES FOR MY DLUCHORRES. YOU NO HAVE?" as if it's their birthright
