The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. In terms of sutural growth, the direction of the pull is meaningless, because sutural growth means that the bone can only grow towards the direction predetermined by the suture. You should pull in a way that maximizes sutural separation. By pulling up and forward you are mostly just bending the maxillary sutures and creating unnecessary friction, rather than pulling them cleanly apart.
