Depends on personal case but braces can also help expanding the jaws if done properly.
Some people notice their teeth shifting agter just one night of not wearing their retainer and some dont. I just fucking lost mine so I dont really care, that shit was hard to keep on no way I would keep wearing it for the rest of my life

Yeah in addition they might put a fixed retainer on the back of your front teeth (I have it on the lower front teeth), its not suggested by some orthos because at some point it will inevitably break anyway and you are likely to not notice until teeth actually start shifting again
