Happened to me too

When I went to tour the school students kept coming up to me to compliment me on my drawings

But the fucking gay school rejected me

I literally almost failed out of high school though so my grades were probably not good enough

I would have just wasted my time at the school anyway so it was probably for the better

It’s value depends on the kind of art you do

If your medium requires expensive tools, large amounts of practice with expensive materials and very specific instruction then art school is great

However my interest was comics so art school had little value for me

The most expensive art tool I’d use making comics is a Cintiq tablet and those go for like $3k max

The other value of art school is just the environment of 24/7 focus on art

But considering most art schools are super expensive, one I wanted to go to was SCAD which has a $35k yearly tuition, they are not worth it for the vast majority of people

They wouldn’t have been worth it for me tbh

The teachers for subjects like illustration and comics or photography are not better than what you can currently find on the internet and the cost considering these are not notoriously high paying fields even for established artists make it so art school cannot be justified

That’s why I say it was probably for the better. I wasn’t super focused on art at the time and looking back the price would have been hard to justify, my parents would have paid it but tbh I would feel bad if I made them pay for that. If I was super focused on art, going to an art school where I could give my passion my full attention would have been a good thing but even then the price for such an experience would have been absurd

Art school is a scam for 90% of those attending

It would be much more intelligent if any parent willing to send their kid to art school just instead spent that money on buying lessons from actual employed artists, sending their kid to an atelier, use that money on an art studio and 4 years of rent payments so the kid can focus on only art instead of bills, letting them travel the world for inspiration, etc. basically anything other than art school is a better use of that money for the majority of artists

Do some commission based job and then paint on the side. Real estate or car sales have clients hitting you up the most on evenings so you would have more time during the day to do it and still make a good chunk of a full time employee, like 70%
