I think contrary to the popular narrative in these spaces, I do think men are generally happier than women. People conflate the social and dating struggles that men face in the modern world to mean that men must go through more internal suffering. However, I do think this is a fallacious argument because the needs of men and women are fundamentally different. One of man's fundamental goal throughout his teenage to early adult life is the pursuit of finding any mate (for that matter). Women prioritize that later in life, given that they internally know they'll always have options. Therefore, what men and women suffer from is not really equatable. While a man may suffer from being involuntarily celibate, a women may suffer from emotional labor, perfectionism, and social drama.
I'm not entirely sure if my theory is correct, given it's an observation I've made from anecdotal experiences. I tend to notice that the men in my life complain a lot less than the women in my life. It's probably the case that some of it has to do with men internalizing their emotions more, but I do believe that Big 5 data on neuroticism does prove me correct on this matter. Men in my life are more satisfiable (with small things like nature, philosophical inquiry, etc.) than women.
It could also be the case that the most depressive of men, skew the data to show that men are more depressive than they actually are. That's demonstrated by the higher suicide rates for men. However, I do think that the average man is going to be more satisfied or happier than the average women. With most things relating to gender differences, I do think that men are found more at the extremes. This means that factoring out the extremely depressive male, men are generally going to be happier than women.
Take this with a grain of salt, since it's my own observations. I do think that biology plays a role, given that men have to be more resilient to stressful environments, given their need to defend their family from external threats.
