Yes, they are called voice recorders, spy shops sell them, some are disguised as pens, lighters, watches, usb sticks, etc... Some of them are very cheap, like $5 on aliexpress, but you would probably want to test them beforehand to see if you can get any usable sound from them.

When they talk about someone, it is 80% trashtalk
And if it is actually compliments, then not neccessarily because you are a kind and cool dude but rather because the person who gives you compliments is just like that
But mostly they complain and trashtalk
