I remember this day vividly.
I has just been clubbing all night in central London and was returning to north London on the night bus. It was about 4 or 5am and already light outside as it was in summer.
The bus stopped at Turnpike Lane and the driver announced over the speaker that the bus was being stopped there and everybody needed to get out. This was unusual as normally the night bus went all the way to Enfield.
So everybody got out and I started talking to this Euro girl who had just finished a night shift. We started walking together through the High Street and immediately could store alarms going off.
Then we started seeing all these men with hoods and masks, smashing up windows and going into shops. It was impossible to ignore the fact that all these men were black.
We kept on walking through the High Street and witnessing these people looting and stealing. One guy was carrying a big TV on his shoulder and was grinning from cheek to cheek.
I couldn't understand why there wasn't any police arriving. Wood Green is a big shopping district with a police presence during the day. Later I learnt that the police were under orders not to intervene, as there were too many lootings going on around London simultaneously.
So after walking through the high street I just made the long walk back to my home. I said goodbye to the girl along the way. Didn't bother to flirt with her or anything.
