A few times a year our company runs internal hackathons and team challenges. This time it was a product focused hackathon. My senior and I ended up doing most of the implementation work and writing like 70% of the code while the rest of the nighas played valorant. Aha, took me right back to my 2nd year college days when I used to do all the work while eveyrone else slacked. Some things just never change but our team finished second.
The china superpower team won was. It was filled with ML engineers, people with years of experience so I already knew we were cooked, they built some giga autist neural net, probably didn't sleep for 48 hours or something because they built a neural net that could probably pass the Turing test and ofc the flashy ai/ml model won. Usually the prizes are mid tier stuff like vouchers, cash etc but this time the management gave us MacBooks, Ipads and Iphone, they had to nuke the remaining budget in their Apple vendor account or something. spend it or lose it money they had to burn basically. So they gave away hardware prizes and we could pick.
I was late to filling the form ended up with some random MacBook Air M4, 1TB model in this sky blue color. They shipped it straight to my door through apple fulfilment to avoid the IT overhead also I know there is no MDM, no corporate spyware or BS like that It's a clean retail unit for myself.
I wish I got the macbook pros tbh. Not that I need any of it. I do most of my shit on cloud a 500$ shitbox is the same to me as that, as long it has an internet connection and keyboard but I still want to be that cool pretentious FAANG bay area engineer with his $4k macbook pro aura farming in a coffee shop.
I actually bought this exact laptop for myself when it got released last year but the 512 gb variant in midnight blue now I have the sky blue. I have zero use for it. My mom doesn't even know how to drag and drop on mac os. In Hindsight. I shouldn't have opened it. I could have sold it somewhere but I'll now use this for watching YouTube and Netflix now. I also played valorant and CS2 with them all, ngl I got dogged on by everyone. Not my fault I'm not used to a mouse and mechanical keyboard.
We stayed in the voice channel for hours after submission, just talking. Not about work just about tech, life, random shit. Turns out there are more premier league and UFC fans like me than I thought. Few watch guys, too. We were just tired and buzzed on cheap energy drinks, sharing pieces of where weโre from and what is going on in our lives.
It was great, honestly. Had a lot of fun. The hackathon was whatever. But those hours after were nice
