Doing kegels in a way is similar to doing vacuum exercise (as described for example here How To Get Flat Abs (weird exercise that works!) - YouTube ) so it both tightens and strengthens.
The thing is that women need the flexibility especially when pregnant so the tightening part is actually more problematic. What we use the kegels and rootlocks fore is the strength compartment while the we try to negate the full tightening effect by relaxing our muscles via reverse kegels and reverse root locks.
What is also important here to note is that when done in a wrong way kegels are not good for the prostate at all, and that is mostly with flexes, that is why I recommend slow clenches rather than rapid flexes. If you do your exercises in a slow and disciplined way you will build strength, if you do them while "sitting in a car" or doing anything else and especially if you hurry them up you will have problems. As with any exercise total dedication and being wholly in the moment is imperative, that is why a lot of people actually get problems with their pelvic floor.
As you noticed you have involuntary kegels yet you don't do kegels, the problem is that your pelvic floor is not strong enough to handle the stress (hence endless IK). Also just because you can't feel then doesn't mean that they are not there, when you start gaining strength so will they become more apparent but you will now be fully conscious of them and in time fix that.
Your idea to do kegels while edging is a very bad idea (not to say that it is actually an advanced exercise best left for way later), because you are essentially bringing even more stress to your edging session and will actually worsen your IK (and making them more apparent). Rather than that you should do them outside of the edging session when you are flaccid.
The other thing is that everybody who has premature ejaculation should strive to have little to no pelvic floor movement in form of either kegels or reverse kegels during edging/sex since that is an ideal position, while reverse kegels might serve as reminders to relax and kegels itself might stop IK when used in a specific way, you should starve towards no pelvic floor activity during edging/sex.
My recommendation to you is to do a level 0 (and just level 0) of the pelvic floor routine outlined here in full with the equal ration for all the four movements, reverse kegel breathing before and/or after complete set of exercises and in the morning and before bed and then see what are your improvements.
Also during that you should edge two times per week (more is to much, and less is problematic because you are stimulating the prostate) to the duration between 25-45 munutes (avoid more than 45 strive for higher than 25). This should introduce some proper balance to your pelvic floor and
