"Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people."
It's a great convo starter with anyone worth their weight. Talk to anyone like recruiter or professor about the day's news, and you can really start building rapport and your impression overall by showing you're not just some hermit who plays games all day. More than that, you stay ahead of the game by learning what's going in the world and how to better adapt to its constant changes. (i.e. some people don't realize that the recession is approaching or about the trade war going on between the US and China).
Only people who don't read the paper are 9/10 gamers/weebs who aren't worth talking to (while that 1/10 is usually the really smart person but those are rare and probably won't want to talk you much). You can usually get to read the daily paper at your local library. I got a NY time access at my and WSJ from my uni.
