I have been thinking about the idea that the mouth width should match the IPD (Interpupillary distance), and it seems wrong.
I believe the best mouth width is one close to or just above the IIW (Inter-iris width), as it seems better for facial aesthetics.
IIW Demonstrated above in red.
A reason for this is that the ideal width of the mouth compared to the nose should be around 1.618x, and to have this but also match IPD, you would most likely need a nose alar base width bigger than the ICD (Inner canthal distance), which would not be ideal. The mouth is mostly compared to the nose anyways compared to the eyes, and in my opinion the mouth-to-nose ratio nearly always matters more than eye alignment.
Also, a downside of a smile that matches the IPD is that when you smile, it will be greater than the IPD. This can give a kind of look that makes you look like "the smiler". An example:
The smile should be the width of the IPD, or only slightly above to look optimal. Otherwise, you get too much teeth show, and it can look too wide.
If you look at most models, is is very rare to have a mouth width that is the same as the IPD, and I think the information in this post explains why.
