When I was 12 I got the news I would be stuck at 5"4 (actually pretty tall for a 12-year-old). I apparently went through puberty extremely quickly, and that caused my growth plates to close very fast. I was on track to being 6 foot my doctor said, maybe 6"1' if I was lucky.
I wouldn't have really cared, but it was my dream to be an Olympic level volleyball player. I was already playing, and by 13 I was the best on my team at a local level, by 14 I was playing on a national level and had the unofficial national record for the fastest serve (in my age group).
I was still 14, and practicing on the 15s net (that's when they make the net higher) and my near 40 inch vertical couldn't save me from how f*cking high that STUPID F*CKING NET-
I stopped playing, and I was so unbelievably depressed.
Not only was I short, but the one thing that I was so good at, I could actually be one of the best in the world, was taken.
I actually got into combat sports for a while, thinking "f*ck it, if I'm going to be short I might as well have a weight class".
I wrestled varsity my first year on the team (almost made it to regionals, one takedown away), and I trained for my first amateur boxing match, but that never went anywhere.
Then around 6 months into me being 15, I found Calisthenics, and holy f*ck I was in love.
I was already strong from weightlifting, so I gave it a shot.
Weighted Pullups, Dips, and I even learned my first handstand pushups in a few weeks.
I'm genuinely gifted at it, and I'm so thankful because I love the sport so much.
So why am I grateful I'm short?
Because in Calisthenics, it's actually an advantage lol
You're leveraged better for skills like Planche and Front lever because your center of gravity is closer.
It's genuinely an amazing thing.
I get to progress faster than anyone in the sport I love, and it allows me to have a chance to be one of the best.
I also have the dopest girlfriend ever who I'm TALLER then.
If I wasn't short, she couldn't be impressed by me doing pullups with her hugging my legs. Or me doing handstand pushups, or me knowing how to fight because the only reason I got into combat sports was because I was short.
I would be one of those gay volleyball kids
So, if you have something you think is a disadvantage, just know that everything comes with pro's and cons, and it's what you make of it.
Every short guy under the sun would be taller if given the option, even the ones who are content with it.
And honestly
I wouldn't. I'd stay where I'm at, because I'm extremely grateful for it.
Cheers,
Brandon
