I still stutter as a grown ass man. Holy shit, I’m such an autistic failure and loser. A fate worse than death. I wish I could speak like how my thoughts flow, or the way I write.

I was starting to slowly stutter at a young age too but my dad shouted loud at me and scared the shit out of me and fixed it before it developed to be worse

You’re not a loser bhai. Speech is complicated and there’s a lot of things that affect it. Have you considered going to one of those speech language pathologists? They can correct it.

It might be a case of your brain working too fast for you to be able to speak it fluently.

It makes you kinda "low inhib", you don't stress and overthink anymore, before when I went out alone I felt watched all the time and I couldn't talk to strangers at all or when I talked with friends I couldn't really talk in sentences properly cuz I stuttered always a lot, which is fixxed now since I took Selank. It also kinda helps with focus apparently (I didn't have that benefit) and it has like other benefits like better immune system etc. but I don't take it for that :hnghn:

You're doing just fine, brother

You’re not a loser, for starters. That’s just your mind spiralling and creating a narrative, but it's not reality. The brain always runs these thoughts when it’s frustrated, but that doesn't make the story true. It's easy to get seduced by thoughts like these but they're poison.

I don’t stutter myself, but I overthink a lot, and I’ve noticed the same basic mechanism underneath it all. I’m really good at thinking, my brain fires fast, and whenever I try to speak while my head is still racing, my speech gets worse. I start to rush, tighten up, trying to get everything out at once, and of course, it falls apart since my mouth literally can’t keep up with my thoughts. But no one can, it's normal.

What helps a lot is realising that speech is supposed to be slower than thoughts, it's natural because you’re not supposed to express everything you think. When you take a step back and slow down, and drop the pressure to ‘perform’ (we all have this subconsciously), things will get better.
And the fact that your thoughts flow effortlessly actually helps you here since it means you’re already sharp so it's not even about ability, bur rather about timing and pressure.

All you're dealing with is a nervous system habit, which can be overcome, and doesn't define you

That totally makes sense. Do you mumble when it happens, or not really? It also makes sense about natural expression. When I write I just have more time to think and what to reply compared to real life where it has to be in a second 95% of the time.

This kind of thing also gets even harder with ADHD.

I also find myself struggling with wanting to get my thoughts out too fast. Especially when i'm trying to explain something. There's so much i want to say but i don't like speaking, so with that combination it creates a paradox and my mind gets completely lost.. :feelswhy:

My brother has always had problems with stuttering, he's around 10 now and struggled with it since baby steps, because he was raised in a stressful enviorment, it really breaks my heart to hear it. I also used to stutter myself, so i completely get numbs issue. It's not something that goes away on it's own tho, you need to practice speaking atleast a bit.

To this day i'm afraid of talking on phones, VC's or sending voice messages, i much rather texting because that's what comfortable and fast. But what helped me with stuttering, mainly, was singing (yes i know, sounds weird) - My favorite musical artists involve people like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, etc. which are all great native speakers. I sang along to their songs a lot, imitated the way they speak and sing, it helped me with pronouncing words and being confident with my tongue.

In reality, there's many ways to replicate that 'practice' but everyone does it differently.

You could try making videos on topics you're intrested about (with no need of publishing them of course), playing games with your friends, talking with your family. It's all about the small steps @NumbThePain :02Pat:

Yeah, I’ve mumbled too, though not as much as I used to.

And tbh, another really important factor here are definitions and conditioning, since you mentioned needing to respond within a second irl most of the time.
I actually think that it is really important to question these beliefs, because that is what they are, beliefs, and not laws. We've all been conditioned to feel like any pause means incompetence, awkwardness, or whatever that is negative, which trains the nervous system to panic and start spiralling out of control, leading to mubling, stuttering, etc.

But when you actually look at it more objectively, what really happens if you pause for a second or two? Nothing happens.
People pause all the time and most don’t even register it. The pressure is almost entirely internal, we are our own worst critics, after all.

I still catch myself doing it from time to time, I think that the urge to reply instantly is just a trained response, a fear of being judged, fear of losing status etc. But when you let yourself pause and collect your thoughts for a few more seconds, you actually come across calmer and more grounded, not weaker.

Silence is also a part of speech, but we tend to never consider this aspect consciously.
I believe it's therefore mostly about unlearning the belief that you have to perform on demand.

I’ve suspected myself of some ADHD-ish tendencies too, never diagnosed, but the pattern is familiar. Most introspective, ND-leaning people are insanely good at thinking, that’s what they practice all day (I'm no different). Speaking, not so much, though.

I’ve had that exact experience where something feels crystal clear and epic in my head, and then when I explain it out loud to a friend or something, it's nowhere near as good as I imagined it to be. And it’s not because the idea was bad, it’s because I only rehearsed it internally in my head.
Thoughts without external expression usually don't automatically translate into good speech, which is something I learned along the way.

Funny enough, I’ve gone the opposite direction with texting vs calling. I used to hate calling, but now I actually prefer it.
Texting actually gives me more anxiety now because it invites overthinking, editing, and just doubting myself in general.
Calling forces you to just be there and let it come out imperfectly, and I’ve reached a point where I’d rather deal with that than sit in my head, which I've really grown to hate.

And I agree that in general, following what you’re genuinely into and expressing that is probably the cleanest way to retrain speech.

No problem, bhai. A lot of people stutter, and in most cases it’s fixable, the key is figuring out the cause. If it’s due to overthinking or fear of speaking, try slowing down. There’s no need to rush your words. Speaking more slowly makes you less likely to stutter or make mistakes because it gives your mind time to regulate between sentences. It also gives your voice more resonance and authority compared to rushed speech.

If it’s not psychological, then visiting a speech therapist (logopedist) would be a good idea, they can really help you work through it.

Mirin hard. You come over to me as a very intelligent and mature person.

I think it's better to collect your thoughts and pause than reacting fast indeed. I have ADHD as well, so I have multiple things going on my head which is probably also the reason for this.
