Many people who are famous just trick themselves into believing that being known is better than not being known, because they have put so much hard work on reaching that stage that they can't recognize their failure or otherwise it would be like rejecting and disowning a great part of their life efforts.

Irrelevance is way better than relevance for the vast majority. Very few people are ready to be relevant. 78% of NFL players go bankrupt or are struggling financially within 2 years of retiring. The same goes for 60% of former NBA players, 5 years after retiring. The main cause of all that is being known and relevant, in the majority of those cases all the money goes to family and friends who consider you "Relevant".

Also no one really gives a damn about you except a very few select people (Mainly parents, grandparents, at best some siblings and aunts/uncles and wife). The majority of people just want to use you to get something from you and ultimately make them more relevant, they don't really hang out with you because you are relevant, they just use it.
