Girays were the Genghisid dynasty that reigned in the Khanate of Crimea from its formation in 1431 until its downfall in 1783.
Sultan Klych-Girey entered WWI as captain and commanded the 3rd Sotnia of the Circassian cavalry regiment of the Savage Division, and in this position he ended the war as colonel, having received all possible awards in his position.
On 28 May 1945, Girey and the rest of Krasnovtsy were "repatriated" to the Soviets (later executed) by the British authorities during Operation Keelhaul. The broken British promise to not hand Krasnov over to the Soviet authorities was influenced by the-then undetected Soviet spy at MI6, Kim Philby.
