Let's clear some things up: Everyone is mentally ill, and mental illness expresses itself differently at different intelligence levels
Why are high IQ (IQ =/= intelligence but its a common proxy) people stereotyped as more mentally ill?
The answer is because what is common (average IQ) is seen as normal (even tho common =/= normal), and what is seen as normal is not seen as mentally ill.
Remember, things like "depression", "autism", "PTSD" etc are diagnoses. Under the medical paradigm, diagnoses warrant treatment, designed to make the patient fit in with average people.
