iris depigmentation via laser?

Does anyone know how/why it lightens the eyes? I mean I know that it targets the melanin and breaks it down, but what type of laser is it and how come we cant just lighten our eyes at home with any ordinary laser?
(genuinely curious, cant find much research online)
