No it is not a contradiction, of course the development of race has changed as we have learnt more about genetics and how close Europeans are to eachother and how far we are from other races. Whilst the term white is now something that should be abandoned I believe beacuse it has a historic meaning which is Northwest germanic the european race is a race that has stood the test of time.

In genetics we see that different races have bigger differences in genetics then even some species have to each other (think bonobo and chimpanzees).

Now I did some digging into Mr Noel ignatiev and found some interesting things about him, one thing I found interesting is that he was literally a comminist jew and has been quoted to say "treason to whiteness is loyalty to humanity". He has also called to "abolish whiteness".

It is a contradiction when your definition of "race" and "whiteness" is able to keep changing over time but nor because of anything fundamental being found, but because average working-class people are able to see through the contradictions of the idea of "race." Once the Irish saw that there material conditions (of course their material conditions weren't completely the same, the Irish had to deal with the British colonizer while the African-Americans dealt with the European-Americans) were similar to the African-American, some of their politicians started supporting the freedom of African-American and the same happened with black's in America.

It had nothing to do with genetics nor even trying to truly understand each other, the reason why Irish are considered "white" as of today is becuase the British (and European-Americans) calling another "white" man less white or not white at all opens the doors for the working-class to organize themselves without having strawman debates like this one that have done more to divide the working-class then unite the working-class (the old trade union's in America faced this problem a lot when it came down to trying to unite both black and white workers, and unfortunately the ruling class was able to be successful with dividing the worker's on the lines of race, so successful to the point where unions barely even exist in America as of today). Also the whole thing about genetics and "race" having some form of connection with each other has already been debunked plenty of times, those studies are conducted by racists who are not afraid to show thier biases in their own studies (which makes the study completely useless), this doesn't even include all of the factors that a person would have to keep in mind when making such a study such as historical context, socio-economic factors, martial conditions, etc.
