Why should 1 year matter?

Getting delayed one year is actually massive. Take the context of the US for instance. Average salary with a STEM degree right upon graduation is around $70k. By being delayed one year, it's essentially costing you 70 grand. You should still obviously go to college though, it's never too late unless you're 30+ I guess.
