Is a calorie surplus a good idea?

On the one hand, I keep hearing muscular + super lean is the optimal build.
On the other hand, as I understand it, a calorie surplus is necessary to grow
muscle. How am I supposed to reduce bf%, and increase muscle mass at the
same time?

safest bet is eat high protein and all healthy ie warrior diet but don't remove sweets, then once you get muscular enough cut out sweets and you'll become shredded
