Does having 20–25% body fat cause growth plates to close earlier than normal? I’m unsure if I should stay in a slight calorie surplus to support growth or try to cut to <20. I know that being overweight increases your estrogen levels that then cause plates to fuse earlier, but on the other hand, I also heard that being in a calorie deficit even if you hit all your macros and micros can slow down growth too and It feels like neither of them is right for me

if you're above 25% then yes of course
going leaner than 15% might not be good but you should be able to grow and get leaner at the same time tbh
you need good hormones tho = active lifestyle, good diet, good sleep. Having social interactions are also beneficial if they are positive.
don't go to a 1000 cal deficit tho, try 300 if yuo keep growing taller and don't build more fat you will look much leaner. If you're decide to still be in a surplus, (avoid being too fat, it gets exponentially harder to lose), don't go overboard and aim for a 300-500 cal surplus if you're active and build mucle too
I'm not an expert heightmaxxer and my advice should be taken with a grain of salt.

not really. That being said most people undershoot their bodyfat. 25% bodyfat people will often say they are no more than 18 and so on.

Your body has energy in fat, the surplus is not essential in these conditions.
