Is fear and pressure a good motivator?

For example: is having a set amount of time till you get kicked out of your house a good motivator to make money and advance?

I’ve also heard people say realising you’re gonna be a father gives you a huge motive to get your life together fully.

For me it’s either finding the self discipline to succeed in a calm environment or forcing a decision that instilled fear into me to get me to work. You think the laid back approach is better?
