Yes, it is, I have medical books and magazines(my mom worked a pharmacist) where it says clearly it's a mental illness. There are scientific studies mentioned there, everything is legit.
In Romania homosexuality was illegal during the communist era and gays were put in psychiatric hospitals to be cured. After the fall of communism the western powers forced us to legalize it and the medical establishment pressured to remove it as an illness. However they never provided us scientific studies to prove it's not an illness, it was just a political decision.

I don't know, the old economic textbooks are still in libraries, I am not familiar with what they teach now in universities, that stuff wasn't based on scientific studies anyway, but the study of homosexuality was - the gays were carefully examined and questioned by psychiatrists, their vital signs analyzed, they suffered from low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, paranoia, etc. - they were ashamed of what they were, they were always afraid of being caught, always thinking people are conspiring against them, etc.
