Is it even worth pursuing a career if you're in a socialist country?

My friend who is a 29 year old chef makes the same as the average wage for an engineer here and he works for the same company as me which is fine dining but not exactly Michelin star. He doesn't have any education and only a couple years in the industry as he used to be in a gang. Its so demotivating knowing that after 5 years of college i'll still barely make more than i do now as a bartender and i'll be able to save even less as by that time as i won't live in one of my parents homes.

Its ironic bcuz Sweden is framed as this equal nation where everyone has the same money. The irony is that the workers all make the same but its still one of the most unequal countries in wealth distribution and home to many billionaires. We have insane taxes but the limit comes very early so the ones who get raped the most by taxes are the upper middle class of hardworking college graduates and not the actual elites as company taxes, shares etc are low in comparison.

ahahah holy shit. its the exact same issue in the netherlands.

we have insanely unequal wealth distribution. many millionaire with old money. But all the workers have the same income due to heavy taxes.
Middle class is completely raped by taxes, especially upper middle class.

But if you are lower middle-class/poor, theres many social wellfare programs to get you up to middle-class. Basically there is no poverty, but there's also no way to ever get out of the middle-class (which is basically the new poor).

trash economic system.

Salaries are gonna increase a lot more after a few years of tenure, otherwise in the first few years its not gonna be much relative to others. In America a lot of college grads are making 45-55k starting in 2022, so average 50k, a bit less then the median wage of america of like 55-60k. Bartenders with tips can make like 50-70k a year. College is only worth it if your in a solid field and work for a few years to get promotions. After like 2-5 years minimum it would pay off.

In Sweden its different as college is free except for the books but you get $400 a month to pay for that. Because of this college is more accessible and you don't go into as much debt but because of this the salaries don't have to be as high to motivate people to get into these fields.

This isn't a bad thing. It's comforting to know you can do whatever you want in life and still not end up poor. A middle-class life is enough for anyone we should be encouraging living frugally with lower impact on the environment than living wasteful and decadent lives.

Most western countries have fucked social mobility now, maybe with the exception of america. Housing prices are completely unaffordable for anyone under the age of 25, people who bought before 2012 have seen their house triple in value or even more in big cities. Its ridiculous.

Having 50% income tax and no property tax is criminal ngl, imo there should be an increasing property tax for the more resedential homes you own, e.g. 1 is at 0, 2 is at 3% and so on so corporations and wealthy individuals don't buy all the property. Most swedish billionaires also hide their assets in an offshore bank account that the swedish government won't even get back.

As an individual I would support myself getting free college but free college for everyone is retarded and waters down wages. The thing is that universities have also gotten so ridiculously greedy in north america that prices have increased by 10s of thousands of % within the past few decades. There needs to be a balance.

I disagree completely. It kills motivation and ambition to know that no matter what you do, your life will not improve financially.

Also it does nothing to stop the millionaires/billionaires from living wasteful. So it fails even in that aspect.

The system is good for the bottom 20% of sick people, high school dropouts and alcoholics. But its terrible for highly motivated individuals as their work doesn't pay off and they live the same lifestyle as those who don't contribute.

Yup. It's disgusting.

People would think I am lucky to be born in the netherlands. But with my academic achievements/capabilities I would've most likely lived wealthier and more appreciated in a less-socialist 'less wealthy' third world country.

Netherlands is all about being born in the right family. What you do with your life matters little.

@ArvidGustavsson We should move to the USA tbh. Europe is fucked for ambitious people.

bruh you want genes to control even more parts of our lives??
literally the opposite.

the only thing that matters in socialist countries is your looks, because no matter how smart/hard-working/ambitious you are. You will have the same financial wealth as everyone else. So the only differentiating aspect is looks.

In non-socialist countries, an ugly subhuman can be valuable and respected due to his productivity and money. No such thing here.

In principle I understand your concerns and I agree

However, in America you could easily not find a job, resorting to your bartender level job would pay peanuts (I'm aware good bartenders can still do ok) and everything needs an expensive, long term degree. Including switching fields

The social welfare net such as it is will mainly help unruly minorities, squeezing out others down at the unfortunate end of the ladder. This will in turn develop into a de facto racial caste system, all the while racial grievance mongering is the norm, with attendant payments and excessive affirmative action distracting and degrading institutional capability

These are just unformed thoughts on a sleepy morning at this time on the matter. It is a useful discussion

Back when Romania was communist and there were always shortages, it was better to work in a shop, food store, gas station, bar, restaurant, etc., than have an intellectual job - you had easy access to resources and could barter them for other stuff or favors...

LOWKEY HUMBLEBRAG

IN ANY CASE ARVID, DEGREE AND EDUCATION ARE DIFFERENT. A DEGREE IS ONLY VALUABLE AS AN ENTRY POINT. COMPANIES VALUE A DEGREE FROM CERTAIN INSTITUTIONS (OUTSIDE OF TOP 10 WORLDWIDE UNIS IN ANY FIELD EXCEPT MED, ENGG - WHERE THERE IS A CERTIFICATION THAT IS LEGALLY REQUIRED TO BE ABLE TO WORK IN THE FIELD) BECAUSE THE BASELINE QUALITY OF THE STUDENT IN TERMS OF INTELLIGENCE, COMPETITIVENESS, NETWORK, ABILITY TO FIT INTO THE COMPANY CULTURE (OR BREED LIKE AN IVY WAY) IS EXPECTED, REASONABLY SO, TO BE ABOVE OTHERS.

OTHER THAN THAT, EDUCATION IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MATTER. SEE THIS AS AN ADVANTAGE. OTHERWISE YOUR EARNING ABILITY AND CAREER WOULD FOREVER BE LINKED TO YOUR DEGREE, WHICH CERTAINLY IS TRUE FOR A LARGE EXTENT OF THE POPULATION, BUT OTHERWISE NOT A MATTER FOR THE INDUSTRIOUS.

Thank God my country isn`t socialist anymore

Its not as simple as that. You might not get a visa and then you're fucked.

I know a couple who are both around 30. In their 20s the guy got accepted and the girl didn't, and she was a freshly graduated engineer.

This is the case everywhere in the world. The simple fact is to stop working in one way or another. I'll work for a few months, live modestly, and then travel or just do whatever I want with my time. So far I've been able to keep at least 6 months of my time free per year in the last four years. Before then I worked at 18 doing a shitty job where I was constantly drunk or high, so I hardly count that. The closest I've been to genuine work is selling produce from forest, no contracts, no bosses, just me making my schedule whenever and however I wanted it to look like. Chefs are always needed. Shitty, low entry office jobs are always needed. You might even be able to scam your employers with doing nothing while WFH. Or if you care about money, go straight to pursuing some line of business or another. If illegal, white collar scams often don't give you long sentences. Often borderline illegal businesses often have the best shot at getting through. Small businesses have a hard time. Either you toil away and possibly crash because of things out of your control or you find cracks. Every society but ours looked down on work. This is borne out of Protestantism and Anglo philosophical views, where utility, usefulness and productivity are of paramount value. At least for the plebs. The ultrarich live on a different planet altogether. It really isn't that different to comparing Richard the Lionheart to some peasant in rural France.

Fuck I do the same, except I am in Austria and I am a chef. Chef is bit of a misnomer as I mostly prepare buffet stuff and keep stock. If anyone can recommend a great Austrian town with skiing and a climbing gym, let me know, as I probably won't stay where I am at right now for the winter.
