It depends on the initial conditions of the society or tribe. In general I would say it is learned, and what is natural is either
A) free love pretty much and the resulting children get raised by the entire tribe (in reality "free love" translates to alpha fux beta ropes)
B) alpha gets a harem and children are raised by women primarily, beta gets scraps
