Is the cheerleader effect real? And is it real for guys?

According to the cheerleader effect, when average looking foids are in a decent sized group, it makes them look more attractive until you really look at each one specifically. Is it the same for guys? Can I just get a large group of friends around me? Would that even make a difference?
