I used to think when I was very small like 7 or 8 that you could tell if people liked you if they were nice to you in person or directly said nice things to you. I thought that nobody was mean to be directly so everyone liked me and thus I was a friend of everybody at my elementary school. It was only after an incident in which I learned a girl I considered a friend and was “nice” me face to face talked shit behind my back did I learn that people always don’t mean what they say. I didn’t know at that age that there was such things as social cues or reading the double meaning of things that I just assumed that if you said something nice you meant it. Brutal experience.
