It is just about improving the chances, but it doesn't imply those desired genes will be completely expressed on the descendants. It is a very random microscopic process after all.

Hypergamy (colloquially referred to as "dating up" or "marrying up") is a term used in social science for the act or practice of a person dating or marrying a spouse of higher social status or sexual capital than themselves, and continuingly attempting to replace their current partner with someone they deem superior.

Genetic recombination (also known as genetic reshuffling) is the exchange of genetic material between different organisms which leads to production of offspring with combinations of traits that differ from those found in either parent.

Hypergamy is an act the individual chooses to do themselves, genetic recombination occurs during meiosis and is random and not by choice. Still tho hypergamy exists because it gives the parents the best chance of having top tier genetic offspring. Yes the genetic material is still randomly exchanged during recombination, however the higher quality the parents the better chance ur kid turns out genetically superior. Of course there are exceptions and u can get very unlucky
