Japan is in a functional sense similar to Latin America.

The Jomon, Ainu, and Ryukyuans were the original inhabitants of the Japanese archipelago.

Then the continental East Asians such as Yayoi (Korean-Tungusics) and Chinese conquered the islands, mixed with the locals to form the Yamato people with every individual having various degrees of Jomonic ancestry, which means that the Yamato is a label as broad as "Latino".

Arent the yamato a distinct ethnic group?

I thought they just displaced the native ethnicities rather than really mixing with them.

The Yamato are the product of interethnic mixing between the Jomonic native and mainland East Asian settlers such as Yayoi and Chinese, the Yayoi were a branch of Koreans and Manchu-Jurchens.

Korean and Japanese are not isolate languages, they are apart of the same language family called Korean-Japonic, the grammar and vocabulary of the two languages are very similar.

It says that this is due to long contact than to relation

So Latin Americans are Japanese?

Latin American ethnogenesis is similar to Japanese ethnogenesis.

The only main difference is that the Iberians and Amerindians were two entirely different races in both phenotype and genotype.

Meanwhile the continental East Asians and the Jomon only differed in phenotype since the latter looked caucasoid, but were still the same genotypic cluster - East Eurasian.
