Hey, I made 2 previous posts about my journey to jaw ascension in case you're interested in the whole pre-operative treatment. But 6th of August is the date.

Short background: I'm 20, living in West-Europe. Wore braces when I was younger to fix my overbite but it came back to a class II malocclusion of around 6mm. Started pre-operative Invisalign treatment in November.

I went for the 3D scans and virtual planning last week (so I have more detailed measurements too: overbite of 4mm, overjet of 8mm). The plan is to get a lower jaw advancement (BSSO) and removal of 2 wisdom teeth, depending on the scans they made they will decide if I need an additional upper jaw advancement (bimax) or genioplasty.
I'm feeling pretty nervous about it since I've never had any surgery done so I'm unsure how I'll handle the pain. Also biggest catch of em all: my preferred surgeon won't be doing my surgery because he broke his dominant arm... He'll be there during surgery to guide a surgical resident. I trust both, but it is a little unexpected.

you’re really gonna let a resident do trimax on your face? You realize these people literally put like angle grinders on your face to cut the bones open right?

This seems sketch asf.

If they’re letting a resident do it then it should be either free or discounted.

U probably do need a genio, you decide it for yourself, not them.

so far it's not trimax. most likely just lower jaw surgery. when i saw the surgeon (with the broken arm) last week he told me the resident had been doing 10 surgeries this way since his arm broke. i don't think the surgeon would let him do it if the resident was unskilled

i'm paying around 1000 euros myself. the rest is covered by health insurance. i'm seeing my surgeon on the 5th of August to talk the plan through based on the measurements, photos and scans. i'll make sure to tell him that i'd like a genio then. and also ask some extra info on the resident. i'll make a post op thread too. i'll have plenty of down time in my bed to write here lol
why would you consider a genio obligatory without knowing my anatomy? is there something i'm missing?

i doubt it's sketchy. it's a public hospital so i assume the resident is capable of performing the surgery if he gets a green flag from the surgeon. but prices are standardised along all public hospitals here so there's no such thing as a discount
why do you think i'd need a genio? i'll make sure to mention it when i see my surgeon on the 5th of August to talk through the plan

Not “sketchy” as in its going to be botched, but sketchy because you are paying thousands to probably get under advanced, and be disappointed with the results.

Almost everyone who gets a bimax also needs a genio of some sort. We can’t see your face, so can’t make the judgement but I would say 99% of the time a genio is needed.

i'm paying around 1k (not including orthodontic work and post-operative care), the rest is covered by health insurance. how much advancement will be made is up to the original surgeon (the one with the broken arm). he's making the plan and the advancement will be made following a 3d printed splint.

so far i'm not getting a bimax, but a "simple" lower jaw surgery. surgeon told me that the in the majoity of cases this is enough. but depending on my scan results, an upper jaw surgery and/or genio can be added, but only a small percent of patients benefit from that. personally i think i need a genio too. there's a lot wrong with my chin (mentolabial angle of only 62° and mentalis habit) that i think won't be fixed by a lower jaw advancement

thanks for being critical though, that's why i come on here

Almost anybody can benefit from a genio , and it’s the most important part of the trimax aesthetically speaking
