Dunno. I'm almost 32 and dating an attractive 18-year-old. Overall I find it easy to date girls around that age. So clearly it can happen. On Tinder, for example, I've usually had my range set to 18-22/23, and something like 90% of my matches have been in that range. In fact, I would argue that it's easier to match with girls in their late teens than those in their mid 20s because the latter tend to be more conscious about status, material things and money (things that you need to show off in your bio I guess, which I don't do), whereas the younger ones don't really expect much, just that you look decent and are pleasant to interact with. Maybe I just have an appearance and "aura" that appeals to younger girls, dunno.

Women can simply have different preferences. To be honest, I don't look significantly older than most 20-21-year-old guys, and I am definitely more physically fit and better looking than average. So it's not like I couldn't compete on looks alone. But it's true that I sometimes wonder why me and not some other guy, especially in places like Tinder where women have so many options. I guess I just fit a certain "niche" pretty well. I'm older and presumably more mature than their age peers, yet I don't look old. There's probably a certain appeal to that. After all, it's not unusual for girls to like something at least a little more mature and older. Also, women are probably not as predictable in their preferences as men might like to think.

As for generation gaps, that hasn't been a problem overall, or maybe I've just been lucky. I'm "open-minded", I guess, so I don't freak out when encountering some differences between myself and others. I also tend to think that these things are exaggerated. As long as you're more or less compatible with someone, you shouldn't have difficulties interacting with them whether they're 30 years older or younger than you. It's more about similar personalities, interests and worldviews than age. Some people are mature already at 18, some still immature at 50. There are so many variations between individuals. I was talking about this with the girl I'm dating and we both agreed on this, and indeed, she's very mature and easy to interact with. That was the only time we ever talked about age, and I was the one to bring up the topic. It's just not a thing that comes up lol.

I'm not claiming that there aren't differences that result from age differences, or that your average late teen girl wouldn't be more immature than an older woman, for example, but ultimately it comes down to individuals more so than the age difference. Women also develop faster than men. The average 18-year-old girl is mentally similar to a guy in his early to mid 20s, tbh. Anyway, I think silly pop culture phenomena like tv shows is not really important if you are able to form a deeper connection with someone. Those are silly things that come and go. Looking at your example, for example, I don't think most women even watch anime. That's more of a matter of individual interests. Much more important are things like liking sports/an active lifestyle, liking music (any genre), liking travelling etc. etc. more general activities, not something so specific. And of course physical attraction is the thing that starts everything in the first place.
