YOU CAN ABSOLUTELY RETIRE OFF IT if you are living anywhere besides major cities, and you could even live in one if you are frugal. If you put it all into ETFs you'll make upwards of 6 figures a year off dividends and profit alone. If you have any level of financial responsibility, you won't even spend all of that and it will compound more than most people will save up in their entire lives in a 401k. If you are really stupid you can just give the money to an investment company and you won't even need to think about it. Even if this werent the case, which it is, having a million dollars still offers you an incredible amount of time and financial freedom and also capital to engage in whatever endeavors you want. With that amount of free time and capital so young you will eventually find something that will earn a living passively. Having a million dollars in liquid cash absolutely sets you for life and I am not having it from the people who say it wont.

So would you be better off in a recession with some shitty job you may or may not get laid off from or with 1 million dollars in investments...? Again, even if you have all these expenses family etc yada yada, it will cover that. With 1 million dollars you have an insane safety net for riskier funds. You can invest in super growers like FANG and TQQQ because you have the capital to last out the market during recessions and bubble bursts. Youll be making 200k a year in profit on average over your lifetime, yes some years will be bad but thats why having a million dollars is so OP because you have the money to invest in these more volatile growers and you can last through bear markets whereas the average person cant afford to make a risky portfolio and have to invest in safer growers such as VOO, and often times during recession they have to pull out from their 401k and take crazy losses. And regardless, even if you are super high inhib and decide to put all your money into VOO youll safely be making 70k a year with INSANELY minimal risk. Funds like VOO do decent even in times of heavy recession, thats the point of safer ETFs like that vs riskier tech ETFs like TQQQ or VOOG. Its actually you who has no idea what youre saying.
