Gold plating is popular for a reason: it stands out as an accent color. It looks great when used selectively (e.g., phone cases, hood ornaments, rings, watch faces, etc.), but it looks tacky on large pieces (e.g., watch straps, car rims).
I disagree that mixing metals is bad. As long as they complement each other (e.g., brass, gold, and copper), it will usually work. Rose gold is popular these days, and that's a gold / copper alloy.
