Because shitty Marvel was on the verge of bankruptcy because of losing to Dc comics and had to sell everything to Sony and 20th century fox. They had very few money and characters to make movies. So they casted him to play a comicbook character nobody knew until then. Somehow it became superhit and every soyboy is Iron man fan these days!
