In American Football, The NFL’s Official Playing Rules run to 95 pages, of which 73 pages are devoted exclusively just for in-game rules (the rest is all about definitions, index and protocol). Imagine internalizing these and apply them in real-time where you are on your feet and have to synchronize with other guys on your team.
In Baseball, the current MLB rulebook clocks in at 284 pages.
There are also many high IQ sports I do not mention here.

The nerds can brag about their organic chemistry, integration methods or some broad game rules all the day but nothing feels like having to apply them on your feet, in front of your teammates and the coach. You have to be a quick learner, You can not do this alone and of course, it is not possible to cram it.

You’re right (again): players don’t internalize the rulebook like a bible. Coaches and staff boil it down into bite-sized pieces for them.
