I’ve always thought they were covering for somebody, and believed that the matching DNA found under the fingernails and commingled with blood spots on the panties indicates that it belongs to the perpetrator. Additionally, her body was wiped down in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence, yet she was found in a seldom used room in the cellar without anything near her that might show it had been used for that purpose. This, the notepad and sharpie, the amount of ransom demanded, and other details found in the home, just make me believe that while the Ramseys may not have committed the murder, they very likely know who did.
The murderer(s) spent the day in the Ramsey's house. Plenty of time to go through paperwork and find the info about John's bonus amount. Plenty of time to write a ransom note in a relaxed manner. One report states that rope, unrecognized by the Ramseys, was found in the adjacent guest room and the bed skirt in the same room was folded up - as though someone had been hiding under there and crawled out from under the bed. The Ramseys did not kill their daughter. Some sick pedophile who stalked that poor baby - got in there and killed her.
