if you hit someone first without him expecting it, you will knock out lots of people
it doesnt matter if your opponent is 7 foot and weights 300 pounds if you hit someone on the chin with a decent punch hes going down

so what's the best alternative in your opinion?

being well rounded is optimal. What is someone will throw themselfes at you and cath you in headlock? Grapling is base for of combat, fight with mulitiple oponents is cope. First basics of grappling, then mma. I wont even mention big gloves that are completly different than bare fist. Boxing is the most limited martial art.
