The history of LGBTQ people in Africa is complex and diverse. There is evidence of same-sex relationships and gender identities in Africa dating back to ancient times. However, the ways in which LGBTQ people have been expressed and understood have varied greatly over time and from place to place. In some pre-colonial African societies, same-sex relationships were accepted or even celebrated. For example, the Azande people of Central Africa had a third gender category called "muxe", which included people who were assigned male at birth but identified as female or had a feminine gender expression. The muxe were an important part of Azande society and held various roles in the community, including priests, warriors, and healers. Other pre-colonial African societies had more negative attitudes towards homosexuality. For example, the Buganda people of East Africa had a law that made it punishable by death to engage in same-sex sexual activity. The arrival of European colonists in Africa had a significant impact on the ways in which homosexuality was understood and treated. European colonists brought their own negative attitudes towards homosexuality with them, and they often imposed these attitudes on the African societies they conquered. In many cases, colonized African governments were forced to adopt laws that criminalized homosexuality. Even after African countries gained independence from European rule, many of the anti-homosexuality laws that had been imposed during colonization remained in place. In fact, some African countries have even passed new laws that further criminalize homosexuality. Today, homosexuality is still illegal in many African countries. However, there is a growing movement to promote LGBTQ+ rights in Africa. LGBTQ+ activists are working to change public attitudes towards homosexuality and to challenge the anti-homosexuality laws that are still in place in many countries. In addition to the legal challenges, LGBTQ+ people in Africa also face social stigma and discrimination. This can make it difficult for them to live openly and authentically. However, there is a growing community of LGBTQ+ people in Africa who are working to create a more inclusive and accepting society. Here are some examples of LGBTQ+ activism in Africa: In 2014, South Africa became the first African country to legalize same-sex marriage. In 2019, Kenya's High Court ruled that the country's anti-homosexuality laws are unconstitutional. In 2021, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights adopted a resolution affirming the rights of LGBTQ+ people. These are just a few examples of the many ways in which LGBTQ+ people in Africa are fighting for their rights. Despite the challenges they face, LGBTQ+ people in Africa are resilient and determined to create a more just and equitable society for all.
